I just finished loading some old footage I shot and some of my free stock footage into FCP and now I’m ready to work…but work on what exactly? My footage library is made up of short little clips, but what to do with them?
I scoured the web looking at videos in search of inspiration. Among other vids, my searching lead to an article on Brain Picking about Marshall McLuhan. I’ve always loved the phrase “the medium is the message” and in a round about way came up with this new idea for what to do with all this footage!
I could use the same footage I have and feature it with different genres of production and video styles, like documentary, movie trailer, TV show opener…
Depending on editing techniques and background music, different stories could be told; Same media, different messages!
Here were some genres I’ve come up with. What could you add?
- Documentary style
- Movie trailer
- SNL style opener
- Music video
- Horror film
- Educational video
Background music is huge in pulling this off. One of my fave sites is Partners in Rhyme and here’s a little plug for them…

Anyhoo, please write in the comments or @drempt_vision and other genres or production styles!! Thanks 😀
